During World War 2, espionage and spying was used on a huge scale by different countries to get the upper-hand on their enemies. Hitler deployed a large spying network during the conflict known as the Abwehr, an intelligence service which dealt with agents in the field to obtain as much information as they could. The Abwehr were a skilled group who were led by a very experienced soldier and admiral, Wilhelm Canaris. • Canaris himself was loyal to Adolf Hitler at the start of the Second World War and he did support the Nazi Party, but as time went on his support waned and he began to pass information to the enemies of Germany. He worked with the British passing vital intel to them about different missions, and the situation must have been bad if the Chief of the Abwehr was even collaborating with the enemy. Canaris also grew tired of Hitler's politics and he wished to save Germany even discussing a possible surrender with Winston Churchill. • However after the 20th July Plot, in which Claus von Stauffenberg planted a bomb inside Hitler's Wolf's Lair which nearly killed the Dictator of Germany, suspicion arose about Canaris. Many of his Abwehr agents had been involved and it was clear he was involved in the planning as his diary revealed meetings had taken place. After this he was arrested and was sentenced to death for treason, being held at Flossenburg Concentration Camp.
