Chapter 17: Interloper - Part One • With the Gonarch dead, Gordon continues to press on towards the Nihilanth's Tower as it telepathically assaults his mind with cryptic messages. He emerges from the headcrab matriarch's lair to find himself a stone's throw from the base of the Tower itself. Before entering the imposing structure, he first cuts through a small village home to the Vortigaunts, the alien slaves that had attacked Black Mesa after the Resonance Cascade, and has some startling revelations on their true nature. Afterwards, he accidentally stumbles into a nest full of one of Xen's deadliest creatures, and must run like hell to make it into the Tower proper. • Playlist with all completed chapters: •    • Black Mesa: Definitive Edition (Full ...   • Notes: • It is impossible to stealth through the Alien Grunt encounter at 2:04; as soon as Gordon drops down from the ledge, they will both be aggro'd. On a related note, here is an excellent video from MarphyBlack illustrating how it is possible to stealth through the first section of Interloper in HL1: •    • Half-Life - Xen Stealth   • Attacking Vorts that are frightened or in a neutral state will not provoke aggression, however they will try to run away from Gordon, much like Black Mesa Personnel (2:34) • Xen Healing Showers from HL1 return in Black Mesa (2:57). These versions heal Gordon much more quickly. Vortigaunts will never use the Healing Showers, contrary to their HL1 counterparts (save for one scripted sequence later in the factory portion of the chapter) • The Alien Controllers in Black Mesa retain their energy orb attack, but can also carpet bomb an area with said orbs, as well as pick up and toss objects at Gordon (8:06) • After the rooftop battle with the Controllers at 8:00, Freeman can still revisit the area after dropping down by entering the doorway at 6:55 • If Gordon stays within the control room during the rooftop battle at 8:00, the enemies' attacks will set the room on fire, forcing him to move • If Gordon takes a wrong turn during the Garg chase sequence at 12:50, it is possible to backtrack onto the correct path • Trivia: • In early public beta versions of the chapter, these first two maps had a significant level of red fog that permeated the entirety of the chapter, giving it a much redder appearance (referred to as xog by the community). This has since been dialed down for subsequent versions • Black Mesa's Interloper omits the Manta Ray sequence that starts off HL1's version of the chapter, where Gordon had to ride the Mantas to a portal to continue on. However, remnants of this sequence remain, such as the spire that Freeman jumps onto at 3:24 • The Vortigaunt Village that opens this chapter (0:22) and all its related scripted sequences is a new addition to Black Mesa. Vortigaunts were not explicitly shown to be beaten by the Grunts or controlled by the Alien Controllers in HL1, nor was their place of shelter depicted • Abstaining from killing any Vortigaunts in this chapter will net players the achievement PhD in Pacifism • Drawings that the Vorts make, such as at 4:38, are also common in their hideouts in Half-Life: Alyx • The native language of the Vorts is called Vortigese (5:16), though HL2 also reveals that the nature of their communication is via flux shifting , which is incomprehensible to humans (or, as the Vorts put it, those whose vortal inputs are impaired ) • The Vort at 5:34 has a coughing fit, which is likely due to their unfavourable living conditions, but may also be a nod to HL2's All-Knowing Vortigaunt, an easter egg in the Water Hazard chapter. Once found, he coughs before becoming aware of Freeman's presence (discovering this easter egg also results in the achievement Vorticough ) • The Vorts' affinity for headcrab as a food item (5:50) is further explored in HL2, as well as Half-Life: Alyx ( SUSTENANCE! ) • As seen at 8:16, the Controllers destroy the teleporter that Gordon was trying to power up by ripping out its components. This is also what kills the Vort shown later at 9:14 • Shooting the Gargantua at 10:47 will alert it to Gordon's presence, but otherwise does nothing. However, it is possible to kill the two Alien Grunts that follow it at 11:06 • Completing the Garg chase at 12:50 without sustaining any damage from the Gargs will net players the Black Mesa Decathlon Winner achievement. The achievement name is a reference to an announcement from the Black Mesa Transit System in Chapter 1 • In HL1, Gordon is pursued by just one Gargantua in the sequence at 12:50, and it is possible to kill it. In Black Mesa, Gordon is pursued by a grand total of 11 Gargantuas and the chase sequence is much longer • The little rock outcropping at 14:38 was added in the Definitive Edition to make it easier for players to jump across the void • The openings in the base of the Tower resembles the head of a Vortigaunt (15:40)
