Skanderbeg, known in Albania as Skënderbeu, and born Gjergj Kastrioti is an Albanian national hero and one of the greatest Balkan freedom fighters in history. He united all the Albanians in the League of Lezhë to fight under his command against the Ottoman Empire, and from 1444 until his death he effectively repulsed 13 Turkish invasions. Skanderbeg defeated the Ottomans in the Battle of Otonetë in September 1446, and in the Battle of Oranik in May 1456. He was also successful against them in the siege of Krujë in 1450, 1466, and 1467. The most important success of Skanderbeg against the Ottomans was in the Battle of Albulena (Battle of Ujëbardha) in September 1457. Skanderbeg has been credited with being one of the main reasons for the delay of Ottoman expansion into Western Europe.
