Phi Ta Khon is a three-day festival that combines religious traditions, local handicrafts, and a fun-loving party atmosphere. It is famous for the colorful masks worn by thousands of locals. The masks are hideous, stretched faces with bright, gaudy colors. The festival's origins are a mix of animist and Buddhist beliefs. It's supposed to recreate the legend of a party that was so much fun that everyone - living or dead - wanted to attend. The Ghost Festival is held on the weekend of the lunar calendar's sixth full moon. The main parade is usually held on Friday (dressing up as a ghost is optional), with pageants and music on Saturday and Buddhist ceremonies on Sunday. • The Ghost Festival is difficult to reach because it is located in Dan Sai Town in Loei Province. It's easiest to get there from Udon Thani (a 3-hour bus ride) or Chiang Mai (a 5-hour bus journey). Buses leave Bangkok from Mo Chit Northern Bus Terminal about 5 times per day. It's about a 7-hour drive. Because Dan Sai is a small town, lodging fills up quickly, so book your hotel or guesthouse early. • WATCH: Ghost Festival (Phi Ta Khon) Thailand -- The Most Spectacular and Haunted Celebration you have ever seen. • #thailand #travel #thynktravel #carnival • • Thank you for spending time with us.
