While Sorrento is a great home base for day trips to the Amalfi Coast and Capri, it's a beautiful, quaint city/town in its own right. You get amazing views of the Bay of Naples from high above and the sunsets are awesome. Sorrento is a great town to just walk around and explore the various restaurants and shops and to people watch. And yes, it's easy to catch the ferry to Capri and to take a day trip to see the beautiful Amalfi Coast.
