Composer: Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) • Pianist: Rudolf Serkin • Year Recorded: 1988 • 00:00 - 1) Allegretto - G minor • 02:16 - 2) Andante con moto - C major • 03:23 - 3) à l'Allemande - D major • 04:57 - 4) Andante Catabile - A major • 06:48 - 5) Risoluto - C minor • 08:02 - 6) Andante - G major -- Allegretto • 09:54 - 7) Molto moderato - C major • 10:57 - 8) Moderato cantabile - C major • 12:19 - 9) Vivace moderato - A minor • 13:02 - 10) Allegramente - A major • 13:16 - 11) Andante, ma non troppo - B flat major • ** At 00:30, Serkin plays F-E♭ to end the musical phrase as opposed to the A♭-G that written in this version of the sheet music. The following link provides a version of the score published by Sauer Leidesdorf which is consistent with what Serkin played. I don't know why some versions differ from others; I'm not a music historian but if I were to guess I would say that it is due to the editor's decision based on preference or research they've conducted. I personally prefer the way that Serkin played it in the recording with F-E♭; it sounds more natural to me and seems in line with similar stylistic decisions Beethoven has made in other pieces. • https://imslp.simssa.ca/files/imglnks... • Sheet music from the video available here: https://ks.imslp.net/files/imglnks/us... • The editor of this version of the sheet music, Eugen d' Albert, wrote the following numbered comments within the sheet music: • 1) These bagatelle are seldom played -- never in public. This is unfortunate, for, properly performed, they are by no means ungrateful. They form excellent examples of the master's work of the last period. The first Bagatelle is to be played simply, not too fast, and without any additions. 00:00 • 2) Expressively, with warmth 00:24 • 3) Play the variation of the theme carefully but unpretentiously. 01:27 • 4) Calm and resigned. 02:16 • 5) With precise rhythm like a folksong. 03:08 • 6) A German waltz. Moderate tempo. Brisk and happy style of performance. 03:23 • 7) Simply, without undue expression. 04:57 • 8) Alla Siciliana would be an appropriate title for this little piece. 06:48 • 9) Play the introduction in a free, rhapsodic style. 08:02 • 10) In pastoral, simple style. Do not make the sixteenths too short, and have careful regard for the rhythmic divisions. 08:37 • 11) *Typo* • 12) Play throughout with much expression and a singing tone. Use no pedal. 10:57 • 13) Rapid waltz-tempo. 12:19 • 14) In these two measures retard a little. 12:37 • 15) Again 'a tempo'. 12:40 • 16) Playfully, coquettishly, but always with simplicity. 13:02 • 17) This excellent example of Beethoven's last period forms a glorious conclusion to these charming pieces. Render this impromptu with seriousness and devotion. 13:16
