Old money vs. New money. • The importance of yellow and gold in The Great Gatsby. • #gold #yellow #thegreatgatsby #analysis #literature #Dionysus #midas • 06/11/2022 • *I’ve also come to a late-night epiphany that Midas comes to the realisation that the ‘golden touch’ only serves to corrupt all that he already has and so washes his hands in the river Pactolus and returns to normal (he also doesn’t die). • In contrast, Gatsby, despite the whisperings of ‘what a grotesque thing a rose is’, continues to idealise Daisy and chase relentlessly after ‘The American Dream’ — his hamartia, ultimately culminating in his death. • ___ • To conclude, the so-called ‘unlikability’ of the characters is why I like them. I believe Gatsby is relatable to many as we all hold, no matter how small, dreams in which we strive to achieve; some with bigger dreams, chasing more desperately than others. Sometimes we lose sight of what we already have and even the goals themselves become murky. What is the point of our dreams anyways? Why does Gatsby so desperately wish to be a part of Old Money? The American Dream is an individual and personal experience to us all. • Whilst ‘The Great Gatsby’ serves largely as a critique on society’s plutomania, it is, to me, a cautionary tale for those striving towards their American dream. • Remember: “Take full account of the excellencies which you possess, and in gratitude remember how you would hanker after them, if you had them not.” (Marcus Aurelius). • 7
