UNESCO: List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding - 2019 • URL: https://ich.unesco.org/en/USL/01489 • Description: The rituals and practices associated with Kit Mikayi Shrine concern the Luos of western Kenya. People access the shrine for many reasons, including for prayers, oaths and associated rituals. During times of catastrophe, Luo elders would conduct rituals there – such as slaughtering animals, dancing and singing – leading to bounty harvests and rain. For generations, the community has relied on the Shrine as a sacred site. However, the element is now threatened by several factors including encroachment upon the surrounding spaces, ageing practitioners and decreased frequency. • Country(ies): Kenya • © Department of Culture, Kenya, 2018 • Duration: 00:09:16 - Support: - (0148900004)
