Full agenda here: https://datascience.stanford.edu/2024... • • Dr. Laura Gwilliams: The Algorithms of Human Language • Abstract: Understanding the neural implementation of complex cognition is a common and core objective of neuroscience and data science. On the one hand, we aim to build intelligent machines that can parse speech and respond appropriately. On the other, we aim to understand the only processing system to have achieved this feat – the human brain. In this talk, Laura Gwilliams will present a series of studies that apply machine learning analysis methods to spatio-temporally resolved neural recordings, to uncover the algorithms supporting the human capacity for language. • Speaker Bio: Laura Gwilliams is jointly appointed between Stanford Psychology, Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute and Stanford Data Science. Her work is focused on understanding the neural representations and operations that give rise to speech comprehension in the human brain. To do so, she brings together insight from neuroscience, linguistics and machine learning, and takes advantage of recording techniques that operate at distinct spatial scales (MEG, ECoG and Neuropixels).
