Korsakoff syndrome, also known as Korsakoff's psychosis or amnesic-confabulatory syndrome, is a neurological disorder caused by severe deficiency of thiamine (vitamin B1), most commonly due to alcohol misuse. It is characterized by severe memory loss, particularly short-term memory, and confabulation (fabrication of stories or events to fill in gaps in memory). Other symptoms may include difficulty learning new information, apathy, and lack of insight into the condition.
