The Project Lira (Alfa-class) submarine was the fastest, deepest-diving, and most advanced Soviet attack sub of the Cold War. Built with titanium and powered by a liquid metal-cooled reactor, it reached a staggering 41 knots (76 km/h)—far outpacing NATO subs. It could dive over 750 meters, making it nearly untouchable. With a tiny crew of just 31 men, it was highly automated. However, its reactor required constant heating, making maintenance difficult and expensive.
