Carrickfergus is known as the oldest town in county Antrim, Northern Ireland, and it is also one of the oldest in Ireland as a whole. This town is home to some attractions and landmarks that wrote down the history of it, one of these landmarks is Carrickfergus castle. (   • Carrickfergus Castle, County Antrim -...  ) • There is a story behind Carrickfergus Castle and even behind the name given to it. The name Fergus translated from the Irish language means strong man . Carrickfergus is a Norman Irish Castle that is located on the northern shore of Belfast Lough in county Antrim. • When one speaks about Carrickfergus town in Northern Ireland, the first thing that is usually mentioned is Carrickfergus Castle for being the first thing to be built in this town when it was first found. This castle moved across several stages, it was besieged in turn by the Scottish, Irish, English and French and thus it played its roles in the military world until 1928, and until today it is one of the best preserved castles in Northern Ireland. • Carrickfergus Castle is taking a very beautiful location since about 1/3 of the castle is surrounded by water - and this was actually larger back in the old time but it has gone smaller due to the land reclamation. Visiting Carrickfergus town means checking this castle the first thing after stepping your feet inside (   • Exploring The Town Of Carrickfergus -...  ). • Going back to the origins of Carrickfergus castle, it is important to mention that it was built back in time by John de Courcy in 1177 and it was intended to be his headquarters after he conquered eastern Ulster. De Courcy was the one who built the inner ward, a small bailey at the end of promontory with a high polygonal curtain wall and east gate and it had several buildings that include the great hall. The position of Carrickfergus castle is considered a strategic one and that goes back to being situated on a rocky promontory that was originally surrounded by sea and that is the reason why it commanded Belfast Lough (which was previously named Carrickfergus Bay). • There were lots of improvements done to the castle when the English control came into action, such as those improvements which were made to the artillery, and this might be the first steps taken in the change that took place for this castle in Northern Ireland. • Carrickfergus town in Northern Ireland was even more famous than Belfast back in time and this is the reason why Carrickfergus castle is actually taking its place and is considered from one of the important castles in the country. Carrickfergus is the oldest town in county Antrim and one of the oldest in Ireland as a whole, and there are other attractions that one could visit in this town in addition to the castle, such as Ulster Transport and Folk Museum (   • Ulster Folk Museum - Holywood - Early...  ). • Since the focus in this video is on Carrickfergus castle, it is important to mention some of the other important castles which are scattered across the country, these castles include Belfast Castle (   • BELFAST CASTLE; Built between 1811-18...  ), Dundrum Castle (   • Dundrum Castle, Co. Down - Amazing Vi...  ), Castle Saunderson (   • Castle Saunderson, County Cavan Irela...  ) and Dunguaire Castle (   • Dunguaire Castle near Kinvara - Count...  ). • Carrickfergus is actually carrying a great history behind and the castle was from the first letters written in this history. There is always more to know about Carrickfergus castle when it comes to its history. In 1778, a small but significant event in the American War of Independence began at Carrickfergus, and that was when John Paul Jones lured a Royal Navy vessel from its moorings into the North Channel and won an hour-long battle. In 1797, the castle has been used as a prison for the prisoners of war and it was even defended during the Napoleonic Wars. In the World Wars, Carrickfergus was also playing some rules; in the World War I, it was used as a garrison and ordnance store and during the Second World War, it was used as an air raid shelter. • Northern Ireland is one beautiful country that is home to lots of attractions and landmarks that will depend on the city or town that you have chosen to travel to and visit while you are heading there.
