In the sandy deserts, military helicopters can appear to glow as if equipped with LED lights. This phenomenon is called the Kopp-Etchells Effect, first observed on the battlefield in Afghanistan. It can be likened to the sparks created by a metal grinder. • Helicopters are typically fitted with abrasion-resistant strips on the leading edges of their rotor blades, which are made from tough titanium or nickel alloys. However, these materials are not as hard as sand. In desert environments, the collision between sand and the protective strips causes tiny metal fragments to break off, oxidize, and ignite, creating a glowing halo around the helicopter. While visually striking, this effect leads to dangerous wear on the rotor blades, and the light makes helicopters more visible at night, increasing the risk of detection. • ---------------- • #militaryaviation #aviationtechnology #sciencefacts
