It is a gradual composed for the church of St. Peter in Salzburg in September of 1777. It is a singularly beautiful text, unusual for its personal tone and non-liturgical Latin text, this setting is a noble tribute to the Blessed Virgin. Mozart experts have postulated that this piece was the composer's private votive offering to the Virgin Mary. It has also been suggested that the Latin may be by St. Thomas Aquinas, but this is far from certain.
