The Mount Fremont Trail out fo the Sunrise hub in eastern Mount Rainier NP is one of the quintessential hikes of MRNP, and the NPS system as a whole in my opinion. What it may lack in distance and difficulty it makes up for in sheer beauty and in-your-face views of The Mountain. In fact, the lack of difficulty make it possible for more people to enjoy than a lot of other trails with similar views and immersion. • You’ll start on an incline pulling you away from the parking lot and visitor center, leading you towards the Sourdough Ridge Trail, where you’ll turn left and walk to The Mountain. After a little bit of ups and downs, you’ll cross a large scree field made easy to walk through by hours and hours of labor to create a wide pathway with scree-rock walls on either side. Thank the NPS trail crews in your head as you go by. After a mile and a half you’ll approach Frozen Lake - the sunrise water supply, kept fenced off - and a 5-way intersection. This is where the Wonderland Trail comes up from White River, and leads off to Winthrop Glacier and Carbon River. This is also where the Burroughs Trail takes off and the Mount Fremont Trail ambles up and away along Frozen Lake. from here on in you’ll be walking along the side of the ridge that makes up Mount Fremont proper. The high point is actually half a mile before the lookout, but the fire lookout was placed on a more advantageous spot for its purpose. • Stay and relax amongst the rock and the fire lookout structure awhile - with views everywhere. Tacoma is obvious, but on clear days to the north you may also be able to spot Glacier Peak and Mount Baker. Sadly, Saint Helens and Adams are hidden from view to the south by the sheer bulk of the volcano. As you walk back towards the big intersection, you’ll get full-frontal views of Rainier, so don’t miss a step and go tumbling down the hillside • RATINGS • Accessibility - 4 Stars • Difficulty - 2.5 Stars • Enjoyment - 4 Stars • Chapters • 0:00 Intro • 2:18 Sourdough Ridge Trail • 4:09 Hoary Marmot • 4:47 Sourdough Ridge Trail • 9:52 Mount Fremont Trail • 18:58 Mount Fremont • 22:24 Mount Fremont Trail • 26:25 Mountain Goat • 31:18 Hoary Marmot • 34:21 Wonderland Trail • 35:34 Outro • #pnw #hiking #mountrainier #mountrainiernationalpark #volcano #marmot #mountaingoat #glacier #wildflowers #sunrise
