Since Migaloo was first sighted in 1991 by Adrian Oosterman and Paul Hodda, the iconic white whale has played hide and seek for many years, and we never know where or when he'll show up next. • But this year is the second in a row where Migaloo's absence has disappointed whale watchers and marine scientists. The question on everyone's lips is, where is Migaloo? And will we ever see him again? • A research team led by Dr. Vanessa Pirotta, a Marine mammal expert at Macquarie University in Sydney, has demonstrated that the current lack of sightings is not necessarily unusual for Migaloo. • FOOTAGE: Darren McDonald / The Oceania Project; Vanessa Pirotta; Whale Watching Sydney; Chris Jones; Manj Gallella; Parso From Above; Sea World Whale Watch; World Cetacean Alliance • PICTURES: Trish Franklin; Dan Burns; Jenny Dean • MIGALOO WHALE SONG: Wally Franklin / The Oceania Project • COVER PICTURE: Dan Burns • BACKGROUND: Tomislav Jakupec / Pixabay • MUSIC: Coma-media / Pixabay • STUDIES: • Sighting records of “Migaloo” the white humpback whale provide evidence of Australian site fidelity and use of New Zealand waters as a migratory route • Vanessa Pirotta, Wally Franklin, Leigh Mansfield, Jodie Lowe, Oskar Peterson • Australian Zoologist (2022) • https://meridian.allenpress.com/austr... • Observations of a hypo-pigmented humpback whale, Megaptera novaeangliae, off east coast Australia: 1991-2000 • Forestell, P.H., Paton, D.A., Hodda, P., Kaufman, G.D. • Memoirs of the Queensland Museum 47 (2): 437-449 (2001) • https://biostor.org/reference/260498 • MORE INFORMATION: • The White Whale Research Centre • https://www.migaloo.com.au • The Oceania Project • https://www.oceania.org.au/ • The Conversation • https://theconversation.com/is-migalo... • Cosmos • https://cosmosmagazine.com/australia/... • Migaloo Twitter account • / migaloo1 • Migaloo Whale Song • / migaloowhalesong
