Some of the triads presented here are diagnostic of the condition, whereas other triads are merely associated with the condition but not diagnostic. Some triads are more historical in nature, and represent only a small proportion of people with the diagnosis. A few noteworthy triads were left out of the presentation due to variability among authors, low specificity/sensitivity, lack of common usage, low yield, or because I covered the topic in another video: • Ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm • 1. abdominal or back pain • 2. hypotension • 3. pulsatile abdominal mass. • Harwood-Nuss' Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine, 5e, Wolfson (2010) • Neuroleptic malignant syndrome • 1. fever • 2. signs of autonomic dysfunction, • 3. movement disorder • Grave's disease • 1. hyperthyroidism • 2. ophthalmopathy • 3. dermopathy • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) • 1. amenorrhea or oligomenorrhea • 2. hirsutism • 3. obesity • Intussusception • 1. pain • 2. palpable sausage-shaped abdominal mass • 3. bloody / currant jelly stool • drug addiction • 1. psychological dependence • 2. physiologic dependence • 3. tolerance • abdominal angina / visceral ischemia / intestinal ischemia • 1. postprandial pain • 2. anorexia • 3. weight loss • abruptio placentae • 1. uterine bleeding • 2. hypertonic uterine contractions or signs of preterm labor • 3. evidence of fetal compromise • acute epiglottitis • 1. dysphagia • 2. dysphonia • 3. dyspnea • 4. drooling • bacterial meningitis • 1. fever • 2. stiff neck • 3. altered mental status • Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome • 1. omphalocele • 2. macroglossia • 3. organomegaly / gigantism • cognitive triad of cognitive theory depression • 1. a person's negative interpretation of his own life experiences • 2. causes a devaluation in himself • 3. which causes depression • diabetes mellitus • 1. polyuria • 2. polydipsia • 3. polyphagia • Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Wegener's) • disease of • 1. upper respiratory tract • 2. lower respiratory tract • 3. kidney • hemolytic uremic syndrome • 1. microangiopathic hemolytic anemia • 2. thrombocytopenia (mild to moderate in severity) • 3. acute renal failure due to thrombosis of the glomerular capillaries (with markedly elevated creatinine levels) • Herpes zoster oticus (Ramsay Hunt syndrome) • 1. ipsilateral facial paralysis • 2. ear pain • 3. vesicles in the auditory canal and auricle • Horner's syndrome • ipsilateral findings • 1. ptosis • 2. miosis • 3. anhidrosis • Huntington's chorea • 1. dominant inheritance • 2. choreoathetosis • 3. dementia • chronic lead poisoning • 1. renal disease • 2. hypertension • 3. hyperuricemia • measles (rubeola) prodrome • 1. cough • 2. coryza • 3. conjunctavitis • milk alkali syndrome • 1. hpercalcemia • 2. systemic alkalosis • 3. renal insufficiency • pelvic sidewall disease • 1. sciatic pain • 2. leg edema • 3. hydronephrosis • pernicious anemia • 1. weakness • 2. sore, pale tongue • 3. numbness and tingling in the extremities • Prune Belly Syndrome (Triad Syndrome) • 1. widely separated abdominal rectus muscles (wrinkled appearance of skin looks like a prune) • 2. hydroureteronephrosis (giant nonobstructed ureters) • 3. cryptorchidism (bladder distention interferes with descent of testicles) • pulmonary embolism • 1. dyspnea • 2. pleuritic type chest pain • 3. hemoptysis • Reye's syndrome • 1. encephalopathy • 2. fatty liver degeneration • 3. transaminase elevation • rhabdomyolysis • 1. muscle weakness • 2. myalgia • 3. dark urine • rickettsialpox • 1. fever • 2 .eschar • 3. rash • salicylate poisoning • 1. hyperventilation • 2. tinnitus • 3. gastrointestinal irritation • syringomyelia • 1. pain • 2. loss of motor function • 3. dissociative sensory loss • quinsy • 1. trismus • 2. uvular deviation • 3. hot potato voice
