Chassis systems have become increasingly common on rifles for PRS and other target shooting disciplines. So what is the difference between a chassis and the good ol' traditional wood rifle stock? Brownells Gun Tech™ Caleb Savant lays it out for us. Chassis are (yep, it's spelled the same whether singular or plural!) precision machined to maintain a relationship between the barreled action and the chassis that isn't affected by humidity, flexing, or other factors that can exert pressure on the barrel and compromise accuracy. Achieving the same precise fit with a wood stock requires bedding, a time-consuming process. With a chassis, you install the barreled action, tighten down the action screws, and you're good to hit the range. A chassis gives you more flexibility in customization, too. Many chassis accept AR-15 components, which opens up a whole universe of readily available, not-overly-expensive accessories. You can easily change the pistol grip, swap buttstock configuration, AND get M-LOK® mounting slots for other accessories, such as a bipod. Some stock makers like Hogue offer polymer / fiberglass stocks with aluminum bedding blocks that provide many of the benefits of a chassis, but you are still limited to a set, non-modifiable exterior stock configuration. • There's plenty more where this came from!
