The human skull is a skeletal framework of the head that encloses and protects the brain. It is formed by 22 bones, excluding the ossicles of the ear. Skull bones are connected by fibrous joints that have a fracture-like appearance and are called sutures. Therefore, most of these bones are immobile, except the mandible. The mandible articulates with the temporal bone and connects with the base of the skull at the temporomandibular joints.
