Kathakali (Malayalam: കഥകളി) is a major classical dance form of India, having fully developed in Kerala by the 17th CE. a story play genre of art, unique in the elaborate and colourful make-up, costumes and facemasks that the traditionally male actor-dancers wear. • -------------- • Story: • This performance tells the story of Nakrathundi, the sister of powerful demon king Narakasura took the form of Lalitha, a beautiful girl, and tried unsuccessfully to seduce Jayanthan, the son of Indra. Having failed in her attempt, Narakathundi came in her true form and attacked Jayanthan, only to be killed by him. • This part is a part of the play Narakasura Vadham, written by Maharaja Karthika Thirunan of Kerala in the 18th CE, based on Bhagavata Purana. • --------------- • Characters: • Nakrathundi - Sister demon of Narakasura, black face and costume • Lalitha - A beautiful girl, Nakrathundi in disguise, yellow makeup • Jayanthan - Indra's son, a handsome brave warrior, green makeup • ---------------- • We saw this Kathakali performance at Kerala Kathakali Center at Fort Kochi, our favourite place for Kathakali performances in Cochin and highly recommended. • http://www.kathakalicentre.com
