In this era the arts markedly flourished, with numerous masterpieces of literature, music, theatre, and visual art gaining extensive recognition. The Excelsior Ball by Luigi Marenco is one such masterpiece. Premiered at the Teatro alla Scala di Milano in 1881, it became extremely popular among the rising bourgeoisie.
