Asha (aka Asher Quinn Asha Elijah) presents his instrumental folk-song 'First love', from the double compilation album Songs of Asher Quinn . Download/CD available here ~ http://ashaquinn.com/songsofasherquin... • I first fell for a girl, aged 6. We were at a birthday party, and she and I hung back... not interested in the party games, or the traditional birthday food at all. Her name was Dawn, and she was very pretty, with a dark brown 'bob' haircut that curled up under her chin, and she wore a pale lavender coloured lambswool cardigan. • Somehow, we started inventing imaginary worlds, and pretty soon we had gone to the garden to sit on the swing-chair. That was our boat, our horse and our magic carpet. We spent the whole time there, travelling to other worlds, and ignoring jelly, custard, and pass-the-parcel. • She was my first travelling companion to other worlds. • The year before I had had visions of Jesus coming through my bedroom wall, quite unexpectedly and unsolicitedly. But when I saw him with thousands of children in the Holy Land, I just wanted to be there with Him... and so I went; through the wall. • This is where I live, actually. In the Holy Land that can be reached through my bedroom wall. I commute to ordinary reality regularly, of course, and I come with angels like Dawn by boat, horse or magic carpet. We don't come for the jelly... we come to build bridges made of ether and turmaline, and I come for the football. • I found football when I was 8. My Godfather introduced me to it, and it was love at first sight. With a football one could weave magic patterns. I also found I could play the piano instinctively, somehow I completely understood their language... their colour; their energy configurations. I found it hard to imagine the appeal of jelly, and pass-the-parcel, when you could travel by magic carpet to a different dimension with an angel, play football or play the piano. • So these are my first loves... Dawn, football, the piano Jesus. • And France... La Belle France!! My parents introduced me to France aged 5... specifically to St. Jean de Luz in the Basque country, where I won a high jump competition at the Micky Mouse Club on the beach, but then came last in the running race. We drove down in my father's red and white Triumph Herald. He smoked a pipe in the car, but I liked that smell. And we'd picnic by a river. • France was a wonderful invention... a magnificent creation! As well as Charentais melon and gallettes, they also had football and hundreds of pretty angels like Dawn, everywhere you turned. Jesus was always there, through my bedroom wall as well. • In France you rarely see jelly, I have to tell you... a merciful blessing. • There... my first loves; Dawn, Jesus, football, the piano France. • We filmed for this, Gloria and I, on a 3-day car pilgrimage starting in Calais, and taking in Rouen, Chartres, Blois, Chinon, Azay-le-Rideau, Aubeterre, Rocamadour, La Douze, Vezelay and Melun... following Jeanne d'Arc, Mary Sophia, The Knights Templar, the camino to Santiago de Compostella, and Christ... all guided by our tour operator, the Archangel Michael. In La Douze I found an old flat football by the church on fete day, and brought it to life. There was a wedding procession just as I scored the winning goal. • This piece was composed in 1995, when my first son was 1 year old. The following year we went to France. It's the kind of music that went into my soul when I was 5... a bit Breton, a bit Basque. To me, it's music to ride a white winged horse to, with a pretty angel on the saddle by your side... mane flowing; hair in the breeze; indigo night sky. Beyond the beyond...
