There are thousands of different cockroach species across the world, but in the UK there are only 2 species that we commonly have as pests. The German cockroach (Blattella germanica) and the Oriental Cockroach (Blatta orientalis). • The German cockroach does not originate in Germany as the name suggests, but as with all cockroaches was originally thought to have come from Asia and spread around the world on trade routes. It is 12-15 mm long. It has a tan brown colour with a dark stripe on its pronotum -- which is like a shield, triangular in shape and designed to protect the back of the neck of the cockroach. Both male and females can fly well if the temperatures are warm enough (over 25 degrees) and all ages have the ability to climb up smooth and polished surfaces. Each female produces about 6 egg cases in her lifetime and she may live for 9 months if the conditions are favourable. Within each of the egg cases about 36 miniature cockroach nymphs emerge after 1 month. These German cockroaches like to live in relatively warm and humid areas. • The oriental cockroach is much bigger, adults reaching almost 30 mm in length. These are a dark mahogany brown colour, and although the males have wings neither of the adult sexes can fly. These cockroaches also do not have the ability to climb up smooth surfaces so are commonly found at ground level in rooms. Each female can produce up to 10 egg cases in her life, these only contain about 16 eggs and takes two months to emerge. Oriental cockroaches like cooler damper conditions and are often associated with drains and may even live outside. • All cockroaches are nocturnal, coming out to feed at night time. Often a few individuals seen during the day indicates a much larger problem. Great places to look for them are around fridge motors and in small cracks and crevices such as behind broken tiles. Evidence of an infestation -- other than seeing the insects themselves - include the egg cases, droppings and faecal smears which are comma-shaped brown smudges. In large numbers cockroaches also leave a characteristic odour. • Cockroaches, in general, cause some damage to products, but the main cause for concern is their potential to contaminate food, and their ability to spread diseases such as Salmonella and Gastroenteritis. • For more information, visit www.rentokil.com • ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- • FIND OUT MORE • Facts about cockroaches: http://ow.ly/Unks30nb8Ya • Facts about bed bugs: http://ow.ly/xgf430naSjM • Facts about flies: http://ow.ly/MA5u30n5LJz • For more information, visit http://www.rentokil.com • ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- • CONNECT WITH US: • Connect with us on social media for pest trends, industry insights, legislation and pest control advice and prevention tips: • SUBSCRIBE to the Rentokil YouTube channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribeRentokil • BLOG: http://www.rentokil.com/blog/ • LINKEDIN:   / rentokil-initial   • TWITTER:   / rentokil   • FACEBOOK:   / rentokilpestcontrol
