You may need to follow a guideline in your own classes, such as when you have a secondary or tertiary leaving group, E2 is favored (major), while with primary leaving groups, SN2 is favored. This is due to not only steric hindrance as an issue for secondary/tertiary leaving groups but also the additional stability of the more substituted alkenes formed in E2.
