Reproduction in Plants - Seed Dispersal • https://www.LearnFatafat.com • The transportation of seeds away from the parent plant, is called seed dispersal. It is important because it prevent overcrowding of the plants thereby reducing the competition for space, sunlight, water, and minerals. It also helps the plant to find new living places i.e. habitats and increase their population. There are different modes of seed dispersal. • Seed dispersal by wind: Seeds of plants like grasses are lighter, seeds of plants like drumstick, mapple have wing-like structures, seeds of plant like milkweed have hairs, due to which they get blown away with wind at different places. • Seed dispersal by floating on water : Seeds of plant such as coconut have fibrous outer coat which help the seed to float on water. Therefore such seeds get carried away by floating on water. • Seed dispersal by animal: Seeds of plants such as Xanthium, having spines or hooks. Such seeds get attached to animal body and get carried away with animals. Seeds present in fruits are often dispersed through animal faeces.
