Hudson Jr. explains the story and significance of the Supreme Court’s Ruling in Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier (1988). • In Hazelwood, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of a school district after a high school principal censored two articles published by the high school newspaper as part of a journalism class. • While the Supreme Court’s 1969 decision in Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District established stronger protections for student speech, Hazelwood gave schools more leeway to censor student expression when the expression took place in the context of activities sponsored by the school.
