After the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001, thirty-eight passenger jets plus four military planes were diverted to Gander as a result of the United States closing its airspace. The population of Gander at the time was 9,651 people. The town, and surrounding communities of Gambo, Glenwood, Lewisporte, Norris Arm, and Appleton, hosted 6,579 stranded passengers over the five days that followed. Writers Irene Sankoff and David Hein visited Gander on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and collected hundreds of hours of interviews with locals in Newfoundland, as well as passengers who were stranded there. These stories inspired the Canadian-produced Broadway musical Come From Away. My project has two intentions: to document some of the 9/11 stories that have inspired the Canadian-produced Broadway musical Come From Away and to address the boost to the local area’s tourism industry. • The interview was conducted by Alina Sergachov on July 13th, 2018 in Gander, Newfoundland. It was filmed by Grace Dow. • 0:00-00:34 intro • 00:35-23:20 what do you remember about the week of 9/11? • 23:21-26:21 what do you remember about the 10th anniversary? • 26:22-35:56 could you anticipate that any of the plane people would come back? • 35:57-36:39 how do you describe something like 9/11 to a child?
