The Sukhothai Kingdom is considered the first direct ancestor to the Kingdom of Thailand we know today. Starting off as a local rebellion against Khmer rule, the Sukhothai would become the center of political and military power in Southeast Asia. • The Sukhothai Kingdom was eventually subject to foreign invasion which led to its downfall. The Ayutthaya Kingdom invaded and took control over Thailand. Ayutthaya is known to have fought many wars with Burmese Kingdoms, notably the Toungoo. It would also be Burma that would lead to its downfall. • The Thonburi Dynasty quickly reunified Thailand and was then usurped.
