It consists of 3 players near the 2-meter line and 3 players beyond the 5-meter line with an assigned Center player in front of the goal. This formation should be used when the offense as one dominant Center who can hold a ball-side position more than 50% of the time. If the right-handed Center primarily uses a strong-side turn, sweep shot, or step out shot then the perimeter should enter the ball from the right side of the formation. If the center has a proficient weak-side turn, backhand shot, or layout then the ball should be entered from the left side of the offense. • With a dominant center along with perimeter players who can protect the ball, the 3-3 is very effective against a press defense. A well placed wet pass will give the center time to take a shot or draw a personal foul against the Center defender. Many press defenses will also use a crash to help the center defender and put pressure on the Center. The center’s ability to hold position and a pass to the Center’s dominant shooting movement will help neutralize the crash. • If the Center cannot hold position the defense will front and press. This neutralizes the Center and the 3-3 formation. In order to reposition, move the ball to the right side of the perimeter so that the front shifts to that side. The center now can make an unopposed screen at the left wing. The left wing will drive through middle and force the Center Defender to make a choice. If they follow the drive the center now has position facing the ball and the goal. If the Center defender chases the Center the wing drive will be open for a pass in front of the goal.
