On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence. The document was engrossed on parchment and, one by one, 56 representatives from all 13 colonies signed it. • he Declaration of Independence was the Continental Congress's line in the sand, their crossing the Rubicon, and their point of no return that, in turn, influenced the destiny of the people they represented. If it were a poker game, the American colonists were all in. Not only were the signers putting their lives and futures on the line, but they were gambling with those of the 2.5 million colonists. Declaring open rebellion against the most powerful empire on earth, these men signed their John Hancocks to the Declaration of Independence. One of the signers of this document, Benjamin Franklin stated in earnest, We must all hang together or, assuredly we shall all hang separately. • The Declaration of Independence states the principles on which our government, and our identity as Americans, are based. Unlike the other founding documents, the Declaration of Independence is not legally binding, but it is powerful. Abraham Lincoln called it “a rebuke and a stumbling-block to tyranny and oppression.” It continues to inspire people around the world to fight for freedom and equality. • This short historical film offers new insight into the sacrifices and suffering of our founding fathers - the original 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence.
