I used this method as a 2nd and 3rd grade teacher and it really helped my students develop a good number sense, and eventually become quicker at using the standard algorithm to subtract later on! With this method, students will jump along the number line using partial addends and subtrahends in a way that breaks down subtraction problems into chunks. • My name is Beth, and I am a full-time online math tutor.
