How to do Synthetic Division by 2x1 VCE METHODS

Do you need to divide a polynomial by 2x+3 or 2x-1 or something similarly nasty? You can either use Long Division or Synthetic Division but it's not straight forward. When the divisor (or denominator) is not 1x but rather 2x or something bigger, these are known as non-monic divisors, specifically linear non-monic polynomial divisors (wow that's a mouthful!) Synthetic division was not made for these but with a slight tweak to the technique, it becomes POSSIBLE. And MUCH easier than Long Division! • While you can use Long Division to perform the calculation, many students struggle with fractions, let alone trying to figure out what fraction multiplies a whole number to produce some other whole number. In other words, you need to DIVIDE fractions. It's outright confusing! Synthetic division for non-monics also uses fractions BUT it's simply a matter of adding, subtracting or multiplying. NO DIVISION necessary. • Watch this video to learn how to smash through those fractional problems and show long division who's boss!
