In this lesson we'll define fluid power systems and identify critical fluid power properties, pressure, flow rate, and valve position, and discuss how these properties must be controlled and measured by a fluid power system to control the strength, speed, and direction of resultant mechanical output. We'll introduce basic fluid power devices, discuss their general purpose, and draw their associated schematics. We'll differentiate between hydraulic and pneumatic systems, compare and contrast the characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of fluid power systems with other systems and, finally, reacquaint ourselves with the concept of energy, power, and efficiency as applied to fluid power systems.
