Meet the vinegaroon, the acid-spraying alien. The vinegaroon, or whip scorpion, is an arachnid that resembles true scorpions with its whip-like tail. It has a unique defense mechanism: when threatened, it sprays concentrated acetic acid from its glands, giving off a vinegar-like smell, hence the name. Vinegaroons are essentially blind and communicate through vibrations and touch using their antennae, which are actually modified legs, to sense their surroundings and locate prey or mates. They inhabit tropical and subtropical areas, excluding Europe and Australia. Despite their intimidating appearance and defensive tactics, vinegaroons are often kept as pets by some enthusiasts.
