Hypatia of Alexandria has been depicted as a revolutionary woman scientist, the last of the ancient pagan scientists, a representative of feminist values (and a feminist icon), and the designer of the astrolabe and hydrometer. However, none of this is true. • Her tragic death at the hands of an angry Christian mob has been considered exemplary of the intolerance of religion in general (and Christianity in particular), and also the death of Greek science.
