You're watching the IMSA Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup at Martinsville Speedway on Saturday, OCT 26, 2024. • The overall event is a 300-lap doubleheader called the Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300 with the Mazda MX-5 Cup taking to the track for 100 laps, directly followed by the 200-lap finale of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship. The Mazda MX-5 Cup race will award $15,000 to the race winner. • The exhibition event will not count toward the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Cup championship, which concluded Oct. 11 at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta. The Martinsville schedule will consist of two practice sessions, single-car qualifying and a 100-lap race split into two stages. Yellow flags will not count for the first 50-lap stage, but will be in effect for the second half. Prize money will also be awarded to the top three drivers at the stage break. • ===== • The Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by Michelin is the signature spec series for Mazda Motorsports. MX-5 Cup offers more than $1 million in prize money and scholarships a year. • The MX-5 Cup race cars start as complete MX-5 road cars from the Mazda Hiroshima, Japan factory before being transported to engineering development partner Flis Performance in Daytona Beach, Florida, where they are transformed into a race car. The process includes disassembly of the production car, welding and paint of a full roll cage and interior, and adding more than 250 motorsports-specific parts.
