Cowboy chasing after bull • LEAD IN • Latin traditions involving bulls are not for everyone, but a toned-down rodeo from Venezuelan culture is going down in the US like a bull who just had his tail yanked. • STORYLINE: • The door opens and a startled bull charges forward. • People cheer and watch admiringly as Venezuelan cowboys, or coleadores as they are called in their homeland, try to reach the bull's tail from their horses. • They chase after the animal, riding up alongside it until one finally grips his hand around the animal's tail and yanks it. • The bull is tipped, rolls over and comes to a rest on its stomach. • This rowdy competition called coleo is traditionally a display of machismo. • The scene is reminiscent of rodeos that happen in countless Venezuelan and Latin American towns. But this tournament is being held in Hialeah, at a ranch about ten miles (16 kilometres) outside Miami, Florida. • The coleadores are competing to represent the U.S. in a world bull tripping championship that will take place in Venezuela later this year. • For most of these cowboys, the U.S. is a second home. The majority are from Venezuela, where coleo as the sport is called, is a tradition. • Some in the Venezuelan diaspora see the event as an opportunity to meet up with friends. • More than anything I like it because it's a Venezuelan sport, and I can listen to the music of my country and be with my friends, says spectator Allison Malena. I feel a little bad for the bull, but he doesn't suffer, supposedly. • However not everyone is convinced. • They (bulls) are chased, they're stressed and distressed, and sometimes captured, grabbed by the tail and dragged to the ground. These engagements are incredibly cruel for the animal, says Adam Roberts, executive vice president of Born Free USA, an animal advocacy organisation. • Miami and surrounding cities have seen a large-scale Venezuelan immigration in recent years, and many have decided to adapt the sport to meet U.S. expectations on animal welfare. • It allows you to show the sport. Do like an exhibition. You don't have to kill each other, says Gabriel Borrachi, who competed in the tournament. • • Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork • Twitter:   / ap_archive   • Facebook:   / aparchives    • Instagram:   / apnews   • • • You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
