Saint of Circumstance is not often a jam vehicle, but it’s more of a jam vehicle than you might think. Sporadically, the band would push past Saint’s usual fizzle-out ending and into totally open exploration. This happened most frequently in the song’s early days. While ‘82 has some interesting Saint jams, I locked in on 1979, 1980 and 1981 as Brent’s Rhodes tone provided some consistency among these otherwise rather varied improvisations. Often, these jams segued into Drums and members of the band would fall out of the jam as the transition neared (primarily Jerry). • Since the band was mapping out uncharted territory, a few of these fall into the “more interesting than good” category. 12/11/79 at Soldiers and Sailors is somewhere between Saint and Estimated Prophet, for instance. Regardless, several of these (11/2/79 at Nassau in particular) rank among the most exciting improvisations of the Brent era. The sheer variety here is impressive enough in itself. 3/10/81 even has a Spanish Jam segment. • A sound quality note: The transitions in this mix are not as smooth as I normally like, since these jams all start and end in so many different ways. On top of that, some of the best Saint jams only exist as audience recordings. And then there’s the issue of early 80s Dead soundboards’ quality being all over the place.
