Kemerovo Oblast is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast), located in southwestern Siberia, where the West Siberian Plain meets the South Siberian Mountains. • 2. The peasant rebellion of Sorokino, officially called the Kulak Rebellion of Sorokino by the Soviet Russian authorities, was a popular uprising against the Soviet policy of war communism in Altai Krai and Kuzbass in central Russia. • 3. Kemerovo is the administrative center of the oblast, though Novokuznetsk is the largest city in the oblast. • 4. Kemerovo Oblast is one of Russia's most urbanized regions, with over 70% of the population living in its nine principal cities. • 5. Aeroflot Flight 593 crashed into a mountain range in the Kemerovo Oblast in 1994. • 6. Kuznetsk Alatau is a mountain range in southern Siberia, Russia, between Kuznetsk Depression and Minusinsk Depression. It stretches for 300 km and the highest peak is 2,178 metres. • 7. Kuznetsk Basin is one of the largest coal mining areas in Russia, covering an area of around 26,000 km2.
