They were up to 24 feet tall and 3 feet wide ! • Prototaxites existed from 420 million to 350 million years ago, when plants were small and simple. • They were probably the biggest organisms on Earth then. • Scientists have been puzzled by Prototaxites for over a century. • Some thought they were lichens, others thought they were algae, and some even thought they were conifers. But in 2007, a study showed that Prototaxites were most likely *fungi* ! • How did they know? By looking at the carbon isotopes in the fossils. • But not everyone agrees with this finding. Some still say that Prototaxites could have been lichens, which are fungi and algae together. • Lichens can also eat organic matter and grow big. The debate is still on. • So what happened to these giant mushrooms? Why did they die out?
