#talkingtudors #tudorhistory #tudorqueens #anneofcleves • This is the stunning, newly-restored portrait of Anne of Cleves, fourth wife of Henry VIII, by Hans Holbein. Her marriage to the Tudor king only lasted six months and was formally annulled on 9 July 1540. In typical Henry style, less than three weeks later he married his fifth wife, Catherine Howard. Anne, though, is the great survivor in this story, as she ended up outliving all of the Tudor queens consort and the king himself, dying at her manor in Chelsea on 18 July 1557. She’s also the only one of Henry’s queens to be buried at Westminster Abbey. A huge thank you to Dr Owen Emmerson for allowing me to use the videos he recorded on his visit to the Louvre in Paris, where this striking portrait is housed and displayed.
