William Shakespeare, the playwright and poet, was born in 1564, and died at the age of fifty-two on April 23, 1616. He grew up in a culture familiar with the Bible. Shakespeare's Bible was likely the Geneva Bible, but he also drew from other versions used during his lifetime, like the psalms used at Anglican church services. • He frequently integrated biblical allusions into his writing. One example of a biblical phrase used by Shakespeare is based on 1 Samuel 3:2: His eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see. Shakespeare used the expression wax dim in Henry VI. This is but one of over 1,200 references Shakespeare made to the Bible in his prolific writings. • Sign up to receive The Book in your inbox daily at https://museumofthebible.org/thebook • Copyright © 2018 Museum of the Bible.
