In this video, we learn about the Dutch bantam. • Quick facts: • • • Average weight (cocks): 550 g (19.4 oz) • • Average weight (hens): 450 g (15.8 oz) • • Family: Phasianidae • Origin: • The exact origin of this diminutive breed is unknown, but chickens of similar appearance have existed in the Netherlands for centuries. It is believed that the Dutch bantam was derived from the bantam breeds imported from Southeast Asia by the Dutch East India Company. • A theory exists that they were initially bred for their small eggs, which were used by peasant farmers. The breed was recognized by Die Nederlandse Hoender Club (The Netherlands Chicken Club) in 1906. • Today the Dutch Bantam is a popular chicken breed in the Netherlands, and it is also bred in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and South Africa. • Description: • The Dutch Bantam is the smallest of all the true bantam breeds. They have small bodies, and large wings, making them good fliers. Dutch bantams have high-set breasts, full tails, and an upright disposition. • They have five-point combs, white earlobes, chalky blue or grey legs, and pale skin. There are 29 recognized colour variations of the Dutch Bantam. • Behaviour and temperament: • Dutch bantams are friendly, active birds with fine-temperaments, although they may be somewhat flighty. The hens are broody and protective, making them excellent mothers. • Uses: • This is mainly an ornamental breed. Dutch bantams are often used as show-birds for exhibition purposes. Dutch Bantams are good egg-layers, producing around 160 small eggs a year on average. This is unique in bantams as they do not typically lay well. • #avibirds #bird #birdwatching #dutchbantam
