The large intestine has four parts: the cecum, colon, rectum, and anal canal. Partly digested food moves through the cecum into the colon, where water and some nutrients, and electrolytes are removed. • There are four main parts of the large intestine, which are: • 1. CECUM • 2. COLON • 3. RECTUM • 4. ANAL CANAL • Interestingly, the colon portion of the large intestine also has four parts which are:- • 1. Ascending Colon • 2. Transverse Colon • 3. Descending Colon • 4. Sigmoid Colon • The approximate length of the large intestine is 1.5 meters (approx. 5 feet). The large intestine is 1/5 of the total length of our gastrointestinal tract. Overall, in humans, the large intestine is about 1.5 meters (5 ft) long, which is about one-fifth of the whole length of the human gastrointestinal tract. • Role of Large Intestine • 1. It absorbs water, salts, electrolytes, and any other remaining absorbable nutrients from the food (chyme) that body can utilize for its growth and functioning. The rest other indigested food and unabsorbed food item like dietary fibers are sent outward from the body via the anal canal in the form of excrete/stools. • As the chyme moves through the large intestine, most of the remaining water is removed, while the chyme is mixed with mucus and bacteria (known as gut flora) and becomes feces (stool). • The ascending colon receives fecal material as a liquid. The muscle of the colon moves the watery waste forward gently along with absorbing all the excess water resulting in the hardening of the stool as they move along into the descending colon. • The bacteria present in the gut flora breakdown some of the nutrient-like fibers present in the food for their own nourishment in order to create acetate, propionate, and butyrate as a waste product, which in turn are used as an energy source, formation of the lining of the interior colon, etc. • Gut flora • A complete set of cooling of bacteria is present inside the large intestine called gut flora, it is also known as gut microbiota, gut microbiome, etc. Here this large intestine houses over 700 species of bacteria that perform a variety of functions like the production of vitamin b7, vitamin K, etc. • KEY FACTS ABOUT LARGE INTESTINE • 1. No protein is absorbed/available in the large intestine. • 2. No digested enzymes are present in the large intestine. • 3. All chemical digestion is already completed in the small intestine before the chyme reaches the large intestine. • 4. The pH of the colon varies from 5.5 to 7 (Slightly acidic to neutral).
