We picked up two ball hones, one for the cylinders and one for the lifter bores. This is a garden variety 2003 4.8 LS with early style cam bearings. Nothing was touched internally prior to teardown so the bore size, bearings etc. were all stock. Honing the cylinders creates a new surface so the rings can properly seat during break in. This is how I understand it at least... • Cylinder hone https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00... • Lifter bore hone https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0D... • The key here is to have the hone turning BEFORE you enter the cylinder and keep it turning until it is completely OUT of the cylinder. This ensures a complete cross hatch and avoids creating vertical scoring of the cylinder wall. • I used random ATF I had on the shelf as a lubricant. This is our first time honing and I'm happy with the results.
