(This video is far sillier than the actual post.) • TL;DR if you want to help the channel, watching the livestream is probably the thing most likely to keep this channel afloat (details below). • So I'm back on youtube. Sort of. ( I in this post is Hayley.. creator of Tornado HQ / Cyclocane / etc.) • Frankly, I got massively burned out putting months and months of unpaid work into getting the channel monetized and then when it did finally get monetized... I calculated that I was making about $0.10 / hour for the time I was spending on it (yes, 10 CENTS an hour). • I've basically always funded my weather projects (Tornado HQ, Cyclocane, Severe Weather Outlook, etc) out of my own pocket. Call it a labor of love. I've been blessed that the actual money it earns tends to be enough to pay for fixed costs like web hosting so at least I'm not actively going into the red to keep things running. But past that, I'm basically working completely unpaid. • And that would be fine enough, but with how things have been going with my other projects, times are hard and money is tight so it's basically not sustainable for me to keep up with something like youtube that requires a massive amount of work to keep going... if I'd like to be able to afford to eat. • If I'm honest, I basically wouldn't even be back on youtube right now except that I've got roughly 30 days to get my stats up to not have my monetization cancelled. I've not made much, but it's nice to at least be breaking even on things like the cost of running the computers and other equipment that powers the livestream, unlike how I was paying out of pocket for everything in the months leading up to getting monetized. • The stats that I need to boost are specifically watch hours (people watching videos, people watching the livestreams (shorts DON'T count)). • The regular videos I make tend to have a short shelf life, and it makes sense... because who's gonna watch something like a future radar video that's long out of date. • So if you're interested in helping out, the livestreams are likely the thing that would be most likely to get this channel back up to the minimums so that I can continue to keep at least breaking even off of it. • If I'm frank, I don't think I'm going to meet the minimums, and I don't have enough money to keep doing youtube unpaid like I was once able to. • And that's okay. Most of us won't be able to turn youtube into something sustainable. I wouldn't be unique at all in that regard. It's just the sad reality of the situation. • I'll probably be spending what free time I can scrape together to work on the livestream since the livestreams are the thing most likely to get my watch hours back to where they need to be. Since you can't count on youtube to show it, the best place to go if you're interested is https://www.tornadohq.com/ and look for the relevant youtube thumbnail. • So we'll see in a month where everything falls. • If I disappear, you know where I'll be... • On the side of the road with a sign that says Will livestream for food .
