#Daspletosaurus torosus, the “Fleshy Frightful Lizard,” was a 30’ long, 4-ton #tyrannosaurid that lived in the Late Cretaceous of northwestern North America around 78 mya. It was named in 1970 by Dale Russell from material found in 1921 originally assigned to #Gorgosaurus. It is a cousin of #Tyrannosaurus. • Its 3’ skull was fused across the top, increasing its bite strength and enhancing ability to bite through bone. It had over 70 teeth, and, like all #tyrannosaurids (but unlike most other #theropods), it had different shaped teeth in its mouth, a condition known as #heterodonty. The teeth in the premaxilla were delicate when compared to the rest of its “killer banana/railroad spike” teeth, leading some #paleontologists to wonder if it used these teeth for gentle manipulations, such as if it needed to pick up its young. The only issue I have with that is the corresponding dentary teeth aren’t delicate… All of its teeth had deep roots, allowing them to withstand massive jaw forces without breaking. • It likely didn’t use such exotic, and cool looking :-), tactics to hunt as it was also quick(ish, these things are relative :-)) and maneuverable, thanks to cool arctometatarsalian ankles and a long tail. Ambush would be the safest way to take down big, powerful creatures who’d like to live another day, dashing from cover or camouflage, vicious bite(s), maybe a swift kick or two for good measure. The hole in a body this bite would leave is prodigious! • It has massive toe claws that, with the powerful leg muscles, would break bones and maybe kick holes in the recipient. Roadhouse (Peter Griffin style ;-))… • Short, powerful, two-fingered claws may have acted as meat hooks, aiding in better aiming bites for in such close range its binocular vision would not have been useful, similar to how our lips and hands help via proprioception when eating once we can’t see where the utensil is going. • In display at the OMSI! • Contact [email protected] to order your life-size skull or skeleton cast • #FossilCrates
