You're essentially having to fire your shoulders and arms in order to support the heavy load making it a great finisher after any full body workout or at the end of a leg day. The goblet of front loaded position also produces a slightly more upright position in comparison to other methods particularly when using heavy loads. This makes it even more quad and core dominant. I typically pause the movement 1-2 inches before the knee touches the floor but in this particular variation I gently touch the floor each rep. The floor-touch variation is a more simple method for teaching the movement as it gives the lifter a frame of reference for depth and range of motion. If you decide to use the floor-touch variation make sure you don't collapse to the floor but instead very gently touch the ground while you keep constant tension on the muscles. Lastly, with this lunge or any lunge make sure to keep a slight forward lean with the hips set back throughout rather than trying to assume an overly upright position which represents faulty mechanics. • For more information on Dr. Joel Seedman check out Advanced Human Performance http://www.AdvancedHumanPerformance.com/ You can also learn more about Dr. Joel Seedman's services including personal training, athletic performance in Atlanta Georgia, strength and conditioning, sport specific training, neuromuscular therapy, as well as coaching for Olympic weightlifting, powerlifting, bodybuilding, and figure competitions.
