Pie Jesu, Domine is an original composition for eight part choir that I created as a way to do justice to the chant used humorously in Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail. Pie Jesu, Domine, Dona eis Requiem translates to Pious Lord Jesus, give them rest. It has been used in Classical music as the last duplet of the Dies Ire in many Masses and was used in the Middle Ages as a prayer for those afflicted by the Bubonic Plague. • In Monty Python the chant was used humorously as the monks beat themselves with their prayer boards between lines. This is a satirical reference to the practice of self-flagellation practiced in that time as a way to punish one's self for sins committed. When I first watched Monty Python I felt bad that such a significant and beautiful prayer essentially went to waste. • I decided that I wanted to try to do justice to Pie Jesu, Domine, so I composed this piece. This was one of the first pieces I composed and remains one of the ones that I am most proud of. I used eight part choir because of the rich harmonies that can be achieved through eight voices. The range is quite wide, which could make it difficult to actually perform, but the range as it is allows for a lot of power and complexity amongst parts. • Thank you for watching!
