These ghostly, colorful, hypnotic images are called leaders. They were a means to assist projectionists and film technicians with timing and color, as well as other aspects of the film. • Transcript: • In the mid -1960s, the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers created the SMPTE Universal FIlm Leader. It featured a continuous countdown from eight to two, with the numbers in the center of a target and a rotating clock arm animation. • During the four count, the letters C C F F would appear around the countdown, signifying the use of those frames as control frames. At two, a quick beep would be heard, sometimes known as the 2-pop. • If you keep your eyes open you may spot one of the China Girl images.
